New Illustration: Meranda

           "Meranda" by Debi Cady
          Copyright 2015 all rights reserved

Meranda is a beautiful, sweet mermaid who lives in the Great Barrier Reef. She is friends with all the ocean creatures, but usually hides from people. She allowed me to paint her portrait as an appeal to humans to make more of an effort to keep the waters of the earth clean - not only to help her and her friends, but to help ourselves as well.

Meranda is now available on many products via my stores at Zazzle , Cafe Press and Red Bubble . I am actually still posting her on Zazzle, with the holiday shopping it has been a really slow process. But I am working on it!

I know it's late, but Ringo & I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas, and we wish you many blessings for the New Year!!

Fabric!

I don't normally post about new types of products available in my stores, mainly because there are too many of them! But today I am going to, because it's something I'm really excited about: fabric!

My Zazzle store now has a line of customizable fabrics, with all my illustrations and photos on it ^_^ There are 7 fabric types to choose from (different weaves of cotton, linen and polyester). And, if you like a particular image, but aren't crazy about the background color, need the print to be larger or smaller, or just want to change the way the image is tiled, you can chan change all these things by clicking the "customize it" button on the product page. The fabrics are available by the yard or as fat quarters. You can also order swatches. You can view my fabrics by going to the Craft Supplies department in my store.

I haven't tried any of the fabrics yet, this is a very new product. But I'm hoping to try some of the quilting cotton in the near future, it looks like it'll be pretty nice...

New Illustration: The Firebird

In Slavic folklore, the Firebird is a magical bird from a faraway land, usually depicted as a small, fire-colored peacock. It can bring blessing or doom to its captor. It glows, and a single feather from the firebird's tail can illuminate an entire room.

This illustration started out as a test for a new art app I was trying. I am quite happy with the results, and so I decided to share it with everyone ^_^

It is now available on a wide variety of products in my stores at  ZazzleCafe PressRed Bubble, and my deviantArt Print shop.

Book Sneak Peek/New Illustration: Amber Faerie

I am working on a new book! It is still in the early stages, with much research, writing and illustrating left to do. But I recently finished the first illustration, and wanted to share it with you ^_^

"Amber Faerie"
©2014 Debi Cady
The Amber Faerie lives in a lagoon on the edge of the Gemstone Forest. She cultivates amber which is then distributed throughout the world. Amber represents eternal love and youth, and is said to have many healing properties. It is the stone of the zodiac signs Taurus and Leo, and is an alternate birthstone for November. This illustration is from my upcoming book "Gemstone Faeries".

Although the book is not completed yet, I am starting to post the illustrations in my stores as I finish them (this way, by the time the book is published, they will all be available). So, this illustration is now available on my stores at ZazzleCafe PressRed Bubble, and my deviantArt print shop

Through the keyhole you can see Alice walking through Wonderland, meeting the Cheshire Cat. Characters from Wonderland inhabit the borders, including the Caterpillar and White Rabbit. Many skeleton keys also float around the keyhole - one of them can unlock the door, to free Alice. But which one? "Alice" is the fourth illustration in my Fairy Tale Fashion Series.

Snegurochka, the Snow Maiden, is happiest in the forest during a snowstorm, holding her friend the snow rabbit. Inspired by the many versions of this popular Russian fairy tale, "Snegurochka" is the third illustration in my Fairy Tale Fashion series.

This illustration is now available on a wide variety of items on my stores at Cafe PressZazzleRed BubbleArtist Rising, and my deviantArt print shop.

As you have most likely guessed, I love the stories about the Snow Maiden. I also love winter, and snow! The past few winters we have not gotten much snow here, I miss it. I'm hoping we will get more this year.

Before I go, I just wanted to share an animated version of this story with you. It's really cute, it was done in Russia in 1952. I hope you enjoy it! (Don't worry, it has subtitles ^_^)

New Illustration: The Firebird (Fairy Tale Fashion Series #1)

Fairy Tale Fashion Series #1
5x7" ink on watercolor paper
©2012 Debi Cady

In Slavic folklore the Firebird is a magical glowing bird from a far-off land, who can bring either blessings or doom to its captor. But what if the Firebird were not a bird at all, but a beautiful woman? In this illustration she is just that. The Firebird stands triumphantly holding a golden apple from the king's tree. The vines encircling the illustration represent the king's garden. This is the first illustration in my Fairy Tale Fashion series.

This illustration is now available in my stores at Cafe PressZazzleRed Bubble, my deviantArt print shop and my gallery on Artist Rising. Be on the lookout for the next illustration in this series, hopefully I will have it posted later this month ^_^

Inspired by apple coral and gaspeite corn maiden fetish carvings by Claudia Peina. These Zuni maidens wear a tabletta headdress used in ceremonial dances depicting the Corn Maiden, who represents the gift of life given by the Great Spirit. These little maiden carvings always make me smile, I hope they will do the same for you ^-^

New Illustration: Saint Francis of Assisi

Saint Francis of Assisi preaching to the animals. St. Francis is the patron saint of animals, the environment, Italy, merchants, and stowaways. His feast day is October 4th.

The original illustration is my Christmas present to my mom, she loves Saint Francis ^-^ And, of course, I had to add a dachshund! lol And a kitty too :D

This illustration is now available in my stores on Cafe PressZazzleRed Bubble, and my deviantArt Print Shop.

Also, over the next few days, I will be adding a lot of new products to all of my stores. They should all be posted by early next week, as long as I don't run into any problems, so be sure to check them out! ^-^

And, just in case I don't post again next week (which is a distinct possibility), I hope you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

New Illustration: Santa Dachshund

"Santa Dachshund"
Digital Mixed Media
©2011 Debi Cady

The full moon shines as an English Cream Santa Dachshund and his squirrel elves bring presents to all the good little dachshunds of the world in their rabbit-drawn sleigh.

This is my new illustration for Christmas. I think it kind of goes with my Gingerbread Dachshunds illustration that I did last Christmas. ^-^

This illustration is now available on my store at Cafe PressZazzleRed Bubble and my deviantArt Print Shop. One thing about the Red Bubble store, though, I am having trouble uploading the files for this illustration on their site, I'm not quite sure what is wrong. So right now you can only get shirts and stickers with this illustration from that site, but you can't get cards or prints. I will keep trying, hopefully I can figure out what is wrong so that I can change it soon...

Just in case I don't get the chance to post again this week, Ringo and I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Halloween! :D

10/31 Update: I finally got this illustration up in the  cards & prints section of my Red Bubble store :D

New Doll: Alyona from "The Scarlet Flower"

I am so excited right now, because I actually made a doll!!! This is something I have wanted to do for many, many years. She is a knitted doll, and I wrote the entire pattern myself - normally I just alter existing patterns, but I couldn't find one in this case. Oh, there are a lot of cute knitted doll patterns out there, to be sure, but none of them were suitable for this project, because I want my dolls to look similar to my illustrations. So in the end, I decided to write this pattern myself, it was my first time doing something like that. I feel like God was guiding me the entire time (I always pray before I start a new project), because all the pieces turned out right on the first or second try! I was so surprised, and I feel really blessed that that happened, I was expecting to have to remake everything several times before I was happy with it. I'm glad that I didn't have to, though!

Anyways, my first doll is inspired by my illustration of "The Scarlet Flower" (Аленький цветочек), which is like the Russian version of "Beauty and the Beast". I named her "Alyona". Actually in the story the main character does not have a name, she is just "the merchant's youngest daughter". But there is a film version of "The Scarlet Flower" from the 1970s that I like very much, and in it they call her Alyona, so that is where I got the name for my doll.

She is made of 100% bamboo yarn, and stuffed with fiber fill made from corn. Her headband is made from swarovski pearls and crystals, she has a swarovski crystal "ring" on her right hand (to represent the ring the beast gives her in the story), and she holds the scarlet flower, made from swarovski crystals and a glass bead, in her left hand. She also has "nail polish", a little feature that I like to give all the girls in my illustrations. She is about 8 inches tall. Well, enough with the descriptions, let's get to the pictures!

Alyona with my original illustration of "The Scarlet Flower". In person the illustration is much darker, especially her dress, but in this picture it looks kind of turquoise because I used the flash when I took it.

Closeup - before I did her hair

Nail Polish!

I love this kind of shoe, I think they are so pretty! So of course, I had to make them for Alyona ^-^

The lace trim on the upper part of the sleeves is a variation I made of the "Torchon Edge" which was originally printed in 1891. The cuffs have gold-trimmed picot edging.

Closeup of Alyona finished - her headband is made of Swarovski pearls and crystals.

The ring from the Beast - a red Swarovski crystal.

Closeup of the back of her hair - for some reason the color looks kind of purply in this picture, but it's actually a dark reddish-brown.

A full-length shot of Alyona finished - she did not want to stand up at first!

I took this picture of her in the sunlight, and thought it was pretty, so here it is!

I cut a lot of her hair before, but she still has a ton!

The Scarlet Flower - made of green and gold Swarovski crystals and a pretty little red glass heart.

The ring in the sunlight.

Took this picture right after I finished rooting her hair, I hadn't made her clothes or "painted" her nails yet...
... And as you can see, she had way way too much hair at first! lol
Well, that's all for now. I had so much fun making Alyona, I am trying to decide which of my illustrations I want to make into a doll next!

Update: You can now commission Alyona at my store on Shop Handmade ^-^ If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

New Illustration: Malina

Malina is a little Russian rag doll. Her costume is based on those from the Kaluga and Moscow regions. She wears lapti shoes, which are usually made of birch bark. Malina means "raspberry" in Russian.

New Illustration: Snow Maiden (Red Version)

©2011 Debi Cady
Ink on watercolor paper
5x7"

This is the second version of the Snow Maiden that I have drawn, the first version was done in different shades of aqua and blue, this one is all whites and red. Why? I have no idea! I just like this picture, and I was envisioning it in different ways. I think they are equally pretty ^-^ I wish I could be there, surrounded by all the snow! It's way too hot here right now :(

New Illustration: Christ the Teacher

Christ the Teacher
Ink on Papyrus

My interpretation of the icon of Jesus, also known as Christ the Pantocrator or Christ in Majesty.  It depicts Jesus holding the Gospels with his hand raised in blessing. I wanted this to look like it was enameled and had a lot of metal and gemstones on it ^-^ I've always liked this icon, so it was fun to draw.

New Illustration: Russian Village in Winter

Ink on Bristol Board

This is my latest illustration, and one of the busiest I've done to date. I'm very happy with it. I wanted to make it very colorful and bright and happy ^-^ And of course, I had to add some dachshunds to it! It seemed sort of empty without them.

This illustration is now available on various items at my stores on Cafe PressZazzleRed Bubble, and my deviantArt Print Shop.
